Ant So The End Is Near
I've been very passionate about ants since the day I discovered a trail of them strolling on my kitchen top. Since then, (some may remember me blogging about this before) I would spend at least half an hour each day, with a piece of scotch tape in my hands, trying to catch all the ants.
Most people I tell to about the ants in the Jemej kitchen would think I'm just over-reacting, being too paranoid. It's something that even my own husband find amusing, has difficulty deciphering why. A night in the Jemej household would be something like this: The Boy on the couch watching TV, me squatting on the floor catching ants.
I have never understood why they can appear out of nowhere, and are just randomly running around. I've checked so many times, there is ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD for them. ABSOLUTELY NO ENTERTAINMENT for them. So why are they still hanging around?! I've sprayed Bygon into a few holes between the floor tiles, and a while later, a pool of them would lie dead around the crime scene. The satisfaction doesn't last long though. The next day, some more of them would still be running around.
To a point, I begin to think whether I'm hallucinating. There can't be so many ants, they seem endless! I even told The Boy, "If one night, while we're sleeping, an army of ants come and carry me away, you promise me you'll save me ok?"
A roll of scotch tape - you wouldn't think this belongs in the kitchen. But it does, in the Jemej kitchen.
Tonight, while I was doing my usual taping of the ants, I started tracing them to a source which I found odd. There seems to be quite a fair number of them running about this source. I always know I can find them around here, but I never found anything suspicious about this source then. The source - the boiler base plate of our kettle. Curiously, I lifted up the base, and to my horror of horrors, A NEST OF ANTS started crawling out from within!!!! ARGH!!!!!!
I SCREAMED. I grabbed the scotch tape. I screamed for The Boy to come help me tape all of them down. They were crawling onto my hands, IT WAS NIGHTMARE COME TRUE. OH-MY-GOD!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!
The Boy had no choice but to dip the whole base into water, as there were too many ants running around. Finally, we had no choice but to throw the base away, as it stated at the bottom "DO NOT IMMERSE IN WATER". Right till he brought the base to the rubbish chute outside, he had ants running over him as well.... ARGH!!!!!!
So the base is gone. What's left is our lonely, traumatised kettle. I wonder if Harvey Norman would sell spare parts.
But AT LAST!!! It is the end of the mystery of the roving ants. At least for now. I still feel itch on my hands. ARGH.

ahhh ha!
well, this usually happens when you have tiny driplets of sweet stuff like after you added the water to your coffee or tea and tiny driplets will splash out onto the table. Ants have an amazing way of scent-ing food and a memory for where the food source was.
I would not recommend using aerosols near food but go get ant poison - tiny box like capsules of brown pellets (sold in all major and minor stores).. and place them where you find them usually and in a week or so, you will be ant-free for at least 3 - 5 months. But hor.......
you must resist the urge to kill t hem during that week or so coz there will be an increase in ant activities as they eat the pellets and bring it back to the queen ant.
yes, I'm a anti-ant fanatic also :D
Erh..what a place to set up home!
Reading the ant-counter(heh!) makes me feel creepycrawly itchy too!
your account is so familiar!! i'm having some problems with ants too, but i always feel bad killing them. :( our ant bait worked only once. after that, those resillient ant community seemed to be immuned! argh!
eiooowww. now, i'm going to sit down on the floor and observe whether there're ants around my house. ugh.
hahahaha... sorry, that was really funny! :) hooray, hopefully from now on you'll be ant free. I was going to suggest the ant poison Ron mentioned as well - my MIL gave me some but I haven't found an occasion to use it - thankfully.
shutterbug > 师傅!!!!!
Ya, those tiny droplets from making milo/coffee could be culprit, but then again, i'm very anal, i make sure i use the dish cloth to give the area around a wipe after i fill up with hot water.
brown pellets, capsules? brand? I have been using the bygon ant killer trap but now i know the whole nest wasn't infected! Wah, i'm not sure whether i can resist the urge, especially when you say there would be an increase in ant activities! =p
Cheers, Your fellow anti-ant fanatic. :D
lilsnooze > my colleagues were telling me that they like warm places - so the kettle was a draw.?!?!
yuling > my dear, you cannot be too soft-hearted. you don't kill them, they attack your food! Yes, they are really quite clever creatures. :p
imp > haha! hope my paranoia didn't rub off you! hee
beanbean > hey, jem said he bumped into you earlier! :)
So envious that you don't have ants to fret over. hahahaa. wonder if your brand of ant poison same as ron's.... i'll be the market surveyor for you guys.
yup, we went to the same chicken rice place for lunch! :) forgot he works in the same area...
i went to check out the 2 tiny packs that my MIL gave me, the brand is Gold Cannon... i think she prob got it from one of her neighbourhood shops? i'll ask her when i see her during the weekend.
heh, thanks babe! i'll look out for it in our fav cold storage this weekend too. :)
Hi there! I came by lilsnooze's site. Interesting that the ants would nest at the base of the kettle. I always thought they would hide in a hole somewhere in the walls or furniture. I hate ants so pray I don't see any ard in my place.
domestic rat > hi there! thanks for dropping by! I've heard abit abt you from shutterbug about some photography he was planning for you. I would love to do that next time too! :)
Not sure why also, it was the heating plate they built their nest in. *shudders* think i was just plain unlucky.
don't mind if i add you to my list of reads? :)
eww.. i had random ants like that too!! then i used the ant pellets.. those are good.. :p
