Cupcakes Galore!

Woke up excitedly today, with a morning kiss from The Boy, asking me, "Somebody's ready for her cupcake making today?"

Yes, I've always been interested in culinary lesssons, and getting ready for today's lesson reminded me of those days when I was taking Food & Nutrition for 'O' Levels. The Boy commented too, that I looked like I was going to school.

Arrived at Palate Sensations at 11, set amidst the quaint neighbourhood of Portsdown Road. Beanbean, her sis and friend came along soon after, and in no time, we donned the aprons, and got busy following Lynn, the pastry chef's instructions. Step by step, we did the measuring, whisking, mixing, etc etc.

We had a lot of fun, picking up some useful, interesting tips along the way. This was certainly recipe books come alive. I guess it could be good to do this once in a while especially for baking, where there are certain methods that I would find difficult to imagine and replicate from just reading the steps alone. Both Beanbean and I also realised that we don't have the best of origami skills, and had great difficulty folding the piping bags!! And the piping wasn't easy either!!

Time flew by, all our cupcakes were out of the oven, and sitting prettily on the tables soon after. The 2 flavours we learnt today:

  • Opera Cupcakes centred with Chocolate Ganache and topped with French Coffee Buttercream Frosting

  • Carrot-Pecan Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing

Admittedly, pastry-making is really an art - thank goodness my piped carrots looked like, uh, carrots!!!

The aspiring patissiers....

It was lunch for the famished girls and The Boy at Colbar across the road thereafter. Heard a lot about this place, finally the opportunity to check out the food! The Boy told me later that the place had strange people working there. When he tried ordering in Mandarin, they told him to order in English, read the whole sentence. And after he gave his orders in English, they replied and did the money collecting in Mandarin!!??!

That very afternoon, my first pair of guinea pigs for my cupcakes. They loved it! And right at that time, got a message from Beanbean exclaiming that our cupcakes turned out really yummy! Will be sure to try out this recipe at home very soon. Heh.

shutterbug > which one?! the 7 july one ah? :D

private sponge > haha, hope you liked the sweet consequences today. they go further than that you know? they go to your hips....

yuling > indeed! i really had fun, it certainly was therapeutic in a way. this other "classmate" of mine had 2 lessons back-to-back, and she was there from 11am till 5pm! she said she wasn't tired, in fact, a great stress reliever!

sharon > those toppings that you see are BAD. Very sinful stuff.... =p

I'm not sure whether they'll have another cupcake making class coming up anytime soon, but not that i can see on the class schedule.

Or see Shermay's - i think they have some similar classes going on. :)

candice > it was fun! Haha, no prob, if i still remember the steps! but generally quite easy, you should be able to do it too! :)

tiffany > $100 per session, which lasted 3 hours. there's hands-on here. some classes may not have, and the price varies. :)

corsage > yeah, you can also ask them the many questions you always have, like why this failed, why that didn't fluff up properly etc.

I was indeed excited!! heheheh

lilsnooze > haha, will try it someday. but beanbean and I both agreed that the steps can be quite tedious! and the mess to clean up after, all that rich creamy butter and cream!!! =p

Hey! The instructress looks familiar. Think she's the same Lynn whose blog I read. She holds private classes in her own kitchen downtown. Min 6 ppl required.
