Pasta Mania
Because we had an overdose of pasta during cooking class yesterday, you'll have to bear with the overload of pictures. Yes, it was the first time making my own pasta, and going through all the steps with the mixing, kneading, rolling and pulling of pasta through the pasta machine (one for the Jemej kitchen? hee. oops), I think it would be better buying the ready-made fresh ones off the shelf!
Seriously, it's difficult weighing the options between the satisfaction and fun of your own fresh-made pasta, and the convenience and guaranteed success of buying off the shelf, albeit the higher prices.
Francoise took us through all the steps, demonstrating as we went along. It's always fascinating watching chefs do these things so effortlessly, they make culinary an art!
With the pasta we had, we made raviolis and linguini out of them. I always thought raviolis were made a la "wantan" style - you wrap each one individually. So I wasn't expecting a long train of pasta laid out in that manner! It got me wondering whether my kitchen table top at home was long enough...
Between making pasta, we were churning out a few types of accompanying sauces. Finally got to try my hand at making some risotto too. I began to fully understand what Beanbean meant by the agony of scrubbing the pot clean after that! It so stubbornly sticks to the pot! At the end of the lesson, we had tried quite a few types of pasta....
I've been going for these classes alone. Though I enjoy knowing more people, it felt good to see a couple of familiar faces - Vanessa and Stacey. Class must have been inspiring enough, for Stacey was ready to buy a pasta machine at the end of it! Hats off to her, for her passion and determination!

hey just realised - no more bangs! :p
my hubby loves making pasta! it's certainly a lot of work, but so much more tastier than the dried packet ones. he had a noodle making machine but it sorta rusted, and i've been looking for a pasta machine since. only saw once in tangs and they dont carry it anymore. let me know if you know where to get can?
had a real good time yesterday.
learnt loads and i'm all pysched to try out the sauces soon, for mr chan. heh.
it was good seeing a friendly face in the crowd too.
ps. send me the photos ya?
pps. why do i look like a grinning idiot in the 1st one? hahahaha... ;p
wow, does it taste really different from fresh pasta you can get at the stores? Still, it is always so satisfying to know that you made everything!
pasta machine! so cool!
Haha I also thought ravioli are made "wanton-style"! No?
I have a weakness for risotto and ravioli...looks yummy*!
No pics of happy jem this time?
Jem must be busy eating away..no time for photos!! :P
yuling > haha, you're sharp! Yes, I decided enough of bangs, too much of a hassel to maintain. =p
Oh! the owner of Palate Sensations was just saying that the ones here not so good. She's making a trip back to Sydney, and offered to buy, if we are interested. She said those there are much better - interested? Gotta let me know asap ya? Email me: eejin.mms@meritus-hotels.com :)
vanessa > Mr Chan will be a very happy, fortunate man! It was a pretty intensive class, we did A LOT!
Haha, you do look very very gleeful in the picture! ;)
corsage > hand-made fresh pasta is definitely MUCH better in taste and texture compared to mass-produced, dried ones off the shelf! It's softer and smoother. To save time, though no money,Da Paolo deli has a selection of fresh made pasta! :)
tiffany > haha, i know, tell me about it! ;)
lilsnooze > heh, i thought so too. You can try making the risotto, pretty easy! Though the pot does get very very sticky, difficult to scrub clean! =p
hahahaha, Jem eating in glee - is that a staple with every food blog entry?
silver-crv > hahaha, yeah, he was enjoying the risotto. ;)
I love ravioli but it's so difficult to find yum ones. Those from Da Paolo, are they that good?
Yeah me too! Haven't bought those from Da Paolo Deli back to cook before. I'm sure it's great - freshly-made ones! Cos the sauce is important too. :)
hey babe, sent you an email at the address you stated above. it's slightly different from the one in the earlier emails? anyway, thot i'll leave you a note here - just in case. :p
man, i feel hungry looking at the pics. i worked up a good sweat the last time at class making the pasta! so i'm opting for the buying from da paolo option. heh. i really enjoyed the fresh ravioli though!
